Hepistanbul is a housing project located in the Istanbul metropolitan area, Esenyurt, with a fast increasing demographic with the domestic migration nearly from all over the country, inhabited mostly by mid-class socio-economic families.

On 56.000 m² site area, the given maximum %40 lot coverage is only used as %28. After a series of analysis for the general layout, it is decided to use low rise and high rise buildings mixed all together. It can be said that it is an increase in the density in horizontal with controlled high rise blocks. The high rises are diverted according to direction, shadow, wind and access point. The 25 storey is accepted as the effective limit both for construction/financial issues and comfort. The units, 1422 in total, are designed in a container logic with different sizes, and placed in various positions in a floor typology. This differentiation is also the main element for their facade design. The low rise row houses have also different heights allowing the roofs to be used as public roof gardens or terraces.
The site is located in the middle of a very dense traffic hub on a low altitude, not providing any vista urban or natural. This lead to setup a inverted social / daily life; open spaces optimizing neighborhood relations and recreations. With the lacking surrounding context, the project itselft is taken as “the context” and is tried to set an example for successors.
Spacial organisation could be described as rhizomatic with the horizontal and vertical relations. There are no centre or centres designated in this organisation A centreless movement is aimed with the attraction points hidden.
The entrances to the site are located on the South road which is projected to be the mostly used and from the North. East and West commercial areas could be used both from inside the compound and from surrounding neighborhood. The closed social spaces and the administration offices are sunk on the North using the advantage of the topography with their South facade open.
Allowing the sun penetrate inside all the compound and courtyards, while its made its east-West rotation through the South, the heights of the buildings aligned on the North-South axis decreases through east while the West masses have different gauges blocking the negative effects of the highway behind and the the West sun.
While there are two main courtyards on the North-South axis, the aim of centerlessness and the purpose for separate / semi private open spaces, led us to create secondary linear passages / courtyards. From these courtyards, the openings allowed passages on the different levels of the project, entrances to the buildings and mostly the critical air flow. All this is organised within a hidden gridal system, creating the afforentioned rhizomatic organisatiom.
There are two main building typology. The high rise blocks with one 25 storey other decending to 10 storeys are 14 in number. The 25 storey is accepted as the effective limit both for construction / financial issues and comfort. These have 6.5×6.5m structural axes with 26x26m floor area containing 4 to 6 apartments in a floor. The units, 1422 in total, are designed in a container logic with different room numbers, and placed in various positions in a floor typology around a central core space. This differentiation is also the main element for their facade design.
The low rise, row houses have also different heights, changing between 12.5m and 18.5m, creating a texture. The roofs created within the this height organisation are used as public roof gardens or terraces attached to the apartments. The similar aspect could be found the high rises, with the differents heights according their levels.
The 4 facades of the blocks are handled differently according their direction; while South and North facades has less openings, the east facade have more. The West facades are also with controlled with structural brise-soleils.
With the proposed boscage on the Northeast, the effect of North-Easter wind is reduced inside the compound. The other dominant wind, the North-Wester is also blocked with the high-rise blocks. But with the non-aligned block placement the cooler South-West wind can easily circulate inside, espacially on the summer months.
